I am a marine ecologist, and several of the projects I work on take me to extremely remote parts of the world to track seabirds. Ubilink devices have been a game changer, as they eliminate the need to return to field sites that are often very difficult to access, substantially reducing expedition costs while maintaining reliable data collection. I have used these devices on pelagic birds in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. These species spend most of their lives at sea, often in remote oceanic areas far from land or other infrastructure. The Ubilink devices reliably collected and transmitted data across a range of sampling schedules, from one fix every 15 minutes on the larger models (C3 X1 ECM25) to one fix every hour on the smaller devices (X1 P1), on which I also tested intervals of one fix every 30 minutes and one fix every 2 hours. Data transmission was highly reliable and timely, with uploads occurring once or twice per day even when birds were in the middle of the open ocean. Battery life and solar panel performance were also excellent, with devices maintaining charge even under persistent cloud cover. When battery levels dropped because of prolonged bad weather or several consecutive days spent inside the nesting burrow, only a few hours at sea in sunlight were needed for the devices to recharge and resume transmission. The X1 P1 devices are particularly impressive: at just 4.5–5 g, they are extremely lightweight, and their flat profile helps minimize drag during flight, making them especially suitable for back-mounted deployments. The devices can also be programmed easily using both simple and more advanced schedules, and they can be switched on or off and checked for battery level directly through the smartphone application, without the need to carry a laptop. This is an especially valuable advantage when working at remote and difficult-to-access field sites.
